Justice O’Connor to help dedicate new UNC-CH law school building

Van Hecke-Wettach Hall, Ridge Road

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor will speak Friday (Oct. 22) at a dedication ceremony for the newly expanded and renovated Van Hecke-Wettach Hall, home of the UNC-CH School of Law, on Oct. 22.

Officials with O’Connor at the free public ceremony will include U.S. Senators John Edwards and Jesse Helms of North Carolina, N.C. Supreme Court Justice Henry Frye, UNC President Molly Broad, UNC-CH Board of Trustees Chair Anne Cates, Interim UNC-CH Chancellor William O. McCoy and law school dean Gene Nichol.

After the ceremony, the school will host an open house from 4-5:30 p.m. The event will kick off this year’s law alumni weekend, an annual event that brings together the law school community, alumni, family and friends.

Ceremony site: Events are planned on the lawn outside the building. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be indoors.

Directions: To reach Van Hecke-Wettach Hall from the north and east, exit I-40 at N.C. 54 west to Chapel Hill. At the western entrance to UNC-CH at Ridge Road and Country Club Road, turn left onto Ridge Road. The building will be on the right. From the south and west, exit the N.C. 54/U.S. 15-501 Bypass to N.C. 54 Business going west and continue to the left onto Ridge Road.

Media parking: Parking will be available in the law school lot to the right of the new building. Broadcasters with heavy equipment or satellite trucks should contact UNC-CH Broadcast Manager Karen Moon at 919-962-8595 for arrangements.

Broadcasters: Audio feeds and a riser for TV cameras will be available.

Still photographers: Event organizers request that photographers not use flashes during O’Connor’s remarks. Flashes will be allowed at other times during the ceremony.
