Dean Smith to take media questions about autobiography today (Nov. 8)

Retired University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill menís basketball coach Dean Smith will answer reportersí questions about his new autobiography from 2:45-3 p.m. today (Nov. 8) at the bookshop, near the Frank Porter Graham Student Union and diagonally across from the Bell Tower.

The session will precede Smithís first signing for the book, released today, "A Coachís Life: My Forty Years in College Basketball" (Random House, $25), by Smith with John Kilgo and Sally Jenkins.

Questions will end promptly at 3 p.m. Media representatives are welcome to remain in the store afterward to film and observe Smithís interaction with fans during the signing, from 3-6 p.m. Reporters also may question fans in line to see Smith and Bullís Head manager Erica Eisdorfer.

The Bullís Head will donate 30 percent of proceeds from autobiography sales during the signing to a new scholarship fund for UNC-CH students experiencing hardship because of Hurricane Floyd.

Directions: From the east, exit I-40 at N.C. 54 west to Chapel Hill. Pass Raleigh Street on the right, turn right into the next driveway, outside the union. Walk up the brick stairway and turn left.

From the south and west, exit the N.C. 54/U.S. 15-501 Bypass (eastbound) to N.C. 54 Business west to Chapel Hill and continue to the right at the union.

From the north, continue south on N.C. 86/Columbia Street to Cameron Avenue, the first stoplight after Franklin Street. Turn right onto Cameron and get into the middle lane. Turn left almost immediately onto Pittsboro Street. At the next stoplight, turn left onto McCauley Street. McCauley crosses Columbia at the next light and becomes South Road. Go through another light, continue past the Bell Tower and Stadium Drive on the right, then turn left into the second union driveway.

Media parking: Limited media parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis outside the union. Use spaces with hooded meters.

Broadcasters: Smith will use a microphone for the media availability. Audio feeds will not be used.

Still photographers: Event organizers request that photographers maintain a comfortable distance from Smith and his fans during the signing. Flashes may be used.
