Feature stories, visuals available in largest outdoor dramas audition

Nearly 200 actors, singers and dancers will compete at the nation's largest combined outdoor drama auditions for 1999 summer attractions nationwide, ranging from "The Lost Colony" in Manteo to "Black River Traders" in Farmington, N.M.

Many candidates will be college drama students looking for summer jobs; others will be aspiring performers hoping the dramas do for them what they helped do in the past for then-unknowns Denzel Washington, Kathleen Turner and others.

Representatives of 14 outdoor theatres from North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Texas and New Mexico will view auditions and choose cast members. They also will interview candidates for jobs in sound, lighting, special effects and stunt work.

UNC-CH’s Institute of Outdoor Drama hosts the auditions annually. Media representatives are invited to cover the auditions:

On-site contacts: Institute of Outdoor Drama Director Scott J. Parker will be available for print and broadcast interviews. Todd Lidh, institute communications director, can provide background and details. Media may reach Lidh Saturday at 219-6374 (cell phone) or 216-2038 (pager).

Visuals: Photography will be unrestricted during dance auditions from 2-3 p.m. Please consult Lidh before filming or photographing during acting and singing auditions from 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Coverage must not disrupt candidates’ concentration and jeopardize their chances.

Parking: Meters in the small circle lot in front of the Union, off South Road near Raleigh Street, will be hooded to reserve spaces for media vehicles.

Contact: Todd Lidh, through 5 p.m. Friday (March 19); 962-1328. Saturday (March 20), 219-6374 (cell phone) or 216-2038 (pager).
