Traveling science laboratory makes stop at Southeast Halifax High School
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (student, faculty/staff tours) and 5 to 7 p.m. (public open house) Tuesday, Oct. 24 at Southeast Halifax High School, 16683 Hwy. 125, Halifax, N.C.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ’s 40-foot traveling science laboratory, carrying state-of-the-art technology, will stop at Southeast Halifax High School Oct. 24. The visit is sponsored by Halifax County Schools and UNC-CH.
The laboratory is called Destiny, named by Southeast Halifax High School and Bladenboro High School students. Glaxo Wellcome Inc. awarded UNC-CH a five-year, $1.6 million grant to build the bus, equip it and support operations.
Following is a schedule of planned activities for the day:
9 to 9:15 a.m.: Ceremony honoring Southeast Halifax High School biology students, from Mary Ann Jones’s allied health science class, who won the "name the bus" contest.
9:45 to 11:15 a.m.: Biology students conduct a "mystery of the crooked cell" activity.
11:20 a.m. to 1:25 p.m.: Southeast Halifax High School students tour the laboratory.
1:30 to 4 p.m.: Halifax County students, faculty and staff tour the laboratory.
5 to 7 p.m.: Open house: tours of the traveling science laboratory, slide presentations and more.
A 5:15 p.m. "debut ceremony" will feature remarks from Dr. Viola Vaughan, principal of Southeast Halifax High School; Dr. Willie Gilchrist, superintendent of Halifax County Schools; Dr. Nicholas Didow, director of the Carolina Center for Public Service at UNC-CH; Dr. Carolyn M. Mayo, director of the N.C. Health Careers Access Program at UNC-CH; and Dr. Skip Bollenbacher, professor of biology and director of the UNC-CH Partnership for Minority Advancement in the Biomolecular Sciences.
