Former N.C. Gov. Hunt to discuss early childhood policy
Thursday, Sept. 26, 12:30-1:30 p.m.
George Watts Hill Alumni Center, UNC campus
Media representatives are invited to cover remarks by former Gov. Jim Hunt at a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill luncheon event Thursday (Sept. 26). Hunt is expected to discuss challenges in early childhood education, especially in light of today’s economy. He will offer suggestions for addressing those challenges to policymakers, researchers and families. He will reflect on his nationally recognized Smart Start initiative and the state of North Carolina’s pre-school educational and care programs. Hunt is also expected to focus on the role of policy and of research in shaping an early childhood agenda.
Hunt’s appearance is part of a daylong symposium, "Policy Challenges for Early Childhood in the Coming Decade," sponsored by the FPG Child Development Institute at UNC-Chapel Hill. The symposium honors the career of Dr. James Gallagher, a longtime institute researcher who has also been influential in national and state policies concerning early childhood.
Hunt is expected to begin speaking at 12:30 p.m. and conclude at about 1 p.m. Following his remarks, reporters would have an opportunity to speak with the former governor, now a partner with the Southeastern U.S. law firm of Womble Carlyle Sandridge and Rice and practicing in the Raleigh office. He also chairs the board of the James B. Hunt Jr. Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy.
