The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hillís Morehead Planetarium and Science Center will premiere its new film, "DNA: The Secret of Life," and host a visit by Nobel laureate and DNA double helix co-discoverer Dr. James Watson Wednesday (May 14).

"DNA: The Secret of Life" is the first major Morehead Center project not associated with the astronomical sciences. Watson collaborated extensively with center director Dr. Holden Thorp and United Kingdom-based filmmakers on the original Morehead Center production.

The movie, which traces the discovery of the DNA double helix and focuses on the future of genomics research, features some of the most advanced computer animations of the DNA molecule ever seen and honors the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the DNA double helix structure.

Film screening: Thorp will be available for interviews, and high-resolution images and video from the film will be available by advance request.

Panel discussion: Watson, Thorp and Dr. Jason Lieb, UNC assistant biology professor, will participate in a panel discussion with some of N.C.ís top high school students about what the DNA double helix discovery has meant to science and what the future holds for genomics research.

Premiere: "An Evening with James Watson" is invitation-only. Media representatives who wish to cover the event should contact Jeff Hill (contact info below) beforehand.
