The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Gatorade Co. will announce a multi-million-dollar partnership designed to increase activity levels among children and reduce childhood obesity.
Dr. Richard Carmona, U.S. Surgeon General, and Mia Hamm, Washington Freedom soccer star and UNC alumna, will join officials representing the Gatorade Co. and UNC’s School of Public Health and Department of Athletics in giving remarks during the announcement briefing.
Nearly 9 million children and adolescents ages 6-19 are considered overweight or obese, national statistics indicate, and only 22 percent of U.S. adolescents are meeting national physical recommendations of six-plus instances of physical activity weekly.
