At its meeting on Thursday, May 26, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Board of Trustees will get an update on Carolina North, the university’s proposed living and learning campus on property one mile north of the main campus.

Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development Tony Waldrop will present an economic impact study of the project, and airport consultants will present a detailed report of a study they did to help the university identify an alternative site for an airport.

The Carolina North draft conceptual plan has not changed since the university presented it more than a year ago because the university has focused its efforts on the airport issue. The university announced in April 2002 that it would close Horace Williams Airport. In September 2002, the N.C. General Assembly passed legislation requiring the university to keep the airport open until January 2005. In July 2004, the legislature adopted language requiring the university to keep the airport open until an accessible replacement facility could be found for MedAir, which serves the university’s Area Health Education Centers program.

The Carolina North portion of the Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday is expected to begin around 10 a.m. and to last several hours, with a 30-minute break for lunch during that time.
