at UNCís mid-year commencement

Sunday (Dec. 18), 2 p.m.
Dean E. Smith Center
UNC-Chapel Hill

Dr. Etta Pisano, director of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hillís Biomedical Research Imaging Center, will speak at UNCís mid-year commencement. Pisano is Kenan professor of radiology and biomedical engineering in UNCís School of Medicine. She also is a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Pisano is best known for her research on improving breast cancer detection technology. In September, Pisanoís role as principal investigator in a digital mammography research study received national and international attention: The four-year study of almost 50,000 women nationwide showed that new digital mammography allows doctors to detect between 15 percent and 28 percent more cancers in women below age 50. The new technology was introduced in 2001.

Pisano, who graduated from Duke Universityís School of Medicine in 1983, has worked at UNC since 1989 when she started as chief of breast imaging and assistant professor of radiology. She chairs the Status of Women Committee, which addresses the concerns and status of women on the faculty at UNC.
