John Edwards, who this week became director of the new Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will be officially welcomed back to Carolina at a reception hosted by students, faculty and staff of the School of Law. The reception will be held at 3 p.m. in the Rotunda of the School of Law, the new centerís campus home. Edwards will be available to the media following the reception.

Edwards, who earned his law degree from Carolina in 1977 and is a former U.S. Senator and vice presidential candidate, will be available for interviews for a short time following the reception. Media representatives interested in scheduling time with Edwards must contact the News Services staff below.

The center is a nonpartisan initiative, bringing together UNC-Chapel Hill faculty and other national public policy experts to examine innovative and practical ideas for moving more Americans out of poverty and into the middle class. Besides leading the new center, Edwards will serve as a guest lecturer on campus.

Edwards holds a part-time, two-year, fixed-term faculty position. He has been designated a University Professor and holds an Alumni Distinguished Professorship, which is funded by private gifts to the university.
