Professor taps into musical roots
for Sunday's commencement address

Sunday (Dec. 17), 2 p.m., Dean E. Smith Center

Media representatives are invited to attend the December commencement ceremony Sunday (Dec. 17) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The ceremony will begin in the Dean E. Smith Center at 2 p.m.

In this year's commencement address Dr. Holden Thorp, Kenan professor of chemistry and chair of the department, is expected to offer words of wisdom through insightful reflections on the Beatles, and what they have in common with Thomas Jefferson, Mia Hamm and a few other historical figures.

December commencement speakers traditionally are respected members of the faculty. Thorp, a native of Fayetteville, was selected in October by a committee of students and faculty. The highly honored professor is also a musician and grew up in the theater.

The fall graduating class consists of 638 bachelor-degree candidates, 294 master-degree candidates, 123 doctoral-degree candidates and 82 candidates for certificates and professional degrees.

Several individual schools will also hold their separate ceremonies: the School of Nursing, Friday, 10:30 a.m.; the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Saturday, 11 a.m.; the School of Information and Library Sciences, Sunday, 10 a.m.
