College leaders, success story
to kick off transfer program

Thursday, March 30, 3-5 p.m.
Educational Resources Center Auditorium
Durham Technical Community College
1637 Lawson St., Durham

State and Triangle leaders in education will kick off the new Carolina Student Transfer Excellence Program (C-STEP), which will recruit talented, low- and moderate-income high school students to pursue bachelorís degrees through three local community colleges and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

C-STEP will be the Triangleís incarnation of a $27 million partnership of eight colleges and universities nationwide with the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation of Landsdowne, Va. The initiative aims to enable more community college students to transfer to four-year institutions.

Carolina is establishing C-STEP, which will begin this fall, with Durham Technical Community College in Durham, Alamance Community College in Graham and Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh.

Officials offering new details about C-STEP, and how students may be considered for participation, include:

Aaron Fulkerson, a Carolina graduate who transferred to UNC-Chapel Hill from Durham Tech and was a national Jack Kent Cooke foundation scholar, also will speak about the new initiative. He is vice president and co-founder of MindTouch, an open-source software development company based in St. Paul, Minn., and Bellvue, Wash.

The program will identify students eligible for the program and guarantee their eventual transfer admission to Carolina if they earn appropriate associate degrees and successfully complete elements of C-STEP at one of the three colleges.
