Media invited to observe Destiny’s hands-on science activities at Brunswick festival

Media representatives are invited to experience hands-on science activities when the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Destiny program participates in the fourth annual Brunswick County Intercultural Festival at Brunswick Community College in Supply.

Saturday (Aug. 25)
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Brunswick Community College
Highway 17, Supply

At the Destiny booth, students will be invited to participate in various activities relating to DNA and genetics. They will extract DNA from strawberries, build models of DNA and use beads to create inheritance bracelets that will reflect genetic traits.

Note: Neither of the two Destiny science buses will be on-site at the festival.

The Destiny traveling science learning program is Morehead Planetarium and Science Center’s formal science education initiative serving pre-college teachers and students across North Carolina. Destiny develops and delivers a standards-based, hands-on curriculum and teacher professional development with a team of educators and a fleet of vehicles that travel throughout the state.

The Destiny program’s activities in Brunswick County are federally funded by the Science Education Partnership Award program. SEPA’s goals are to engage the public in medical research, stimulate interest in science and encourage the next generation of health professionals.

The Brunswick County Intercultural Festival began in 2004 as a venue for individuals from all cultures to show and share their heritage. In 2006, more than 2,500 attended the festival, which features entertainment, food and artifacts from around the world. It is free and open to the public.
