‘Four R’s’ to be theme of concert
by UNC Symphony Orchestra

CHAPEL HILL – The four R’s will be the theme of a classical music concert on April 25 by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Symphony Orchestra.

UNC music professor Tonu Kalam will conduct the 100-member orchestra in works by composers whose names begin with the letter "R." The concert will begin at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall’s Beasley-Curtis Auditorium.

Dr. Mayron Tsong, UNC assistant professor of piano, will be the soloist for the Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Opus 18, by Serge Rachmaninoff (1873-1943). She will play the Hamburg Steinway concert grand piano donated to UNC in December by the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust of Chapel Hill.

The orchestra also will perform "Isle of Bliss," composed in 1995 by Einojuhani Rautavaara; "Fountains of Rome," by Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) and "Bolero," by Maurice Ravel (1875-1937).

"This is a wonderful program of colorful music for large orchestra, including the ever-popular ‘Bolero,’" Kalam said. "We are also very excited to present Mayron Tsong in her first orchestral appearance in North Carolina."

Orchestra members include UNC music majors, non-majors and community residents and are chosen through auditions each August.

Tickets – $10 for the public and $2 for students – are available by calling or visiting the Memorial Hall box office (919-843-3333,) open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. On performance days, the box office is open from 10 a.m. until intermission.
