New servers for ibiblio.org will speed access to Groklaw.net
CHAPEL HILL –Groklaw.net, an open-source legal news and discussion Web site, soon will be quicker to access because of a gift from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to ibiblio.org – a public library and digital archive located at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The company, headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif., presented two dual-core AMD Opteron servers to ibiblio.org in support of Groklaw.net to improve the speed and reliability of the site. Groklaw.net has been hosted by ibiblio.org since October 2003.
“We’re delighted to expand our partnerships to include AMD,” said Paul Jones, director of ibiblio.org and clinical associate professor at the schools of information and library science and journalism and mass communication.
“It’s a great company with strong ties to the open-source movement, as well as a deep understanding of both the open-source community and the contributions of Groklaw and ibiblio,” he said. “Groklaw readers and contributors and ibiblio users can expect to see even faster response and even better performance in the very near future as the AMD gifts are put into production.”
The servers are expected to be operating by April 20.
“Groklaw is deeply grateful to AMD for this generous gift, one that we sorely needed,” said Pamela Jones, founder and editor of Groklaw. “Groklaw just keeps growing, and as it does, we’ve experienced growing pains. It’s wonderful to know that now we can continue to grow and expand in peace. And I’m happy to know that other collections in the marvelous ibiblio family, the public library on the Internet, will be benefiting as well.”
A contributor-run digital library and archive, ibiblio.org is a project of the schools of information and library science and journalism and mass communication at UNC. It began as a way to share and support numerous kinds of free software.
Now, ibiblio.org also hosts more than 2,000 non-software related projects, including Project Gutenburg, a free book archive; etree.org, where fans of tape-friendly bands share concert music; information about charities and non-profits in North Carolina and worldwide; video documentaries of folk practice; educational sites and more. ibiblio.org serves more than 14 million requests for information per day.
“AMD is delighted to assist in keeping projects like Groklaw available to the open-source community,” said Marc Miller, open source relations manager in the AMD Developer Outreach team. “This is part of our mission to support open standards, freedom of choice in operating systems, and foster the growth of industries important to the success of AMD products.”
