Construction to begin Sept. 4 on railway line at UNC cogeneration facility

As part of the replacement of the steam tunnel from the cogeneration facility at 575 W. Cameron Ave. to the main campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a new tunnel will need to cross under the railway line there in two places. A section of the railway line bringing fuel to the facility must be removed to install the new steam tunnel beneath.

The construction will begin Sept. 4 and will continue throughout October. This work must be completed within the months of September and October, the only months of the year when fuel requirements are low enough to accomplish this work.

To complete the required work in the time allowed, the contractor will have to work around the clock for many days. Residents of homes near the facility were notified by Carolina by a letter Aug. 28 about the construction and its possible effects on their neighborhood.
