Schedule for Carolina Jazz Festival
March 1-4 at UNC-Chapel Hill
CHAPEL HILL — Everyone is invited to the following clinics, concerts, discussions and jams that will compose the 2006 Carolina Jazz Festival, March 1-4 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Events are free unless otherwise noted. Sales for ticketed events are ongoing at two campus box offices: Carolina Union (919-962-1449), open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, and Memorial Hall (919-843-3333) open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, until intermission on performance nights during the week and from noon until intermission on Saturday and Sunday performance dates.

March 1
"Meet the Artists," 7 p.m. Union Cabaret, Frank Porter Graham Student Union, South Road. Music professor and festival director James Ketch will moderate a discussion with artists in residence – and professional jazz musicians – Don Braden, Sean Jones and Vincent Gardner. Tickets: $10 for the public at the Carolina Union Box Office, cover admission for this event and the jam session afterward. Free for UNC students, faculty and staff.
Artists/Faculty Jam Session, 8 p.m. Union Cabaret, Frank Porter Graham Student Union, South Road. Festival artists in residence Don Braden (tenor sax), Sean Jones (trumpet) and Vincent Gardner (trombone) will jam with UNC jazz studies faculty members James Ketch (trumpet), Stephen Anderson (piano), John Brown (bass), Ed Paolantonio (piano) and Thomas Taylor (drums). Tickets: $10 for the public at the Carolina Union Box Office, cover admission to this event and the discussion beforehand. Free for UNC faculty, staff and students. Seating is limited.
March 2
North Carolina Regional "Essentially Ellington" High School Jazz Festival, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Great Hall, Frank Porter Graham Student Union, South Road. Clinics and performances by 13 jazz bands and seven combos from high schools around the state. The UNC Jazz Band and festival artists in residence will perform late in the afternoon. Co-sponsored by Jazz at Lincoln Center, a New York nonprofit organization dedicated to jazz. Free.
Concert prelude, 7:45 p.m. Memorial Hall, Cameron Avenue. The high school jazz band judged to be most outstanding during the "Essentially Ellington" festival will perform for ticketed concert-goers before the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra concert.
North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra concert, 8 p.m. Memorial Hall, Cameron Avenue. Festival visiting artists Don Braden (saxophone), Sean Jones (trumpet) and Vincent Gardner (trombone) will perform with the 18-member orchestra directed by James Ketch, UNC music professor and jazz festival director. Also part of the 2005-2006 Carolina Performing Arts Series. Tickets: $15, public; $12, seniors; $5, all students, Memorial Hall Box Office.
Jazz After Hours, 11 p.m. Talulla’s Restaurant, 456 W. Franklin St. (919) 933-1177. Jam session open to musicians and listeners who are 21 or older. Some festival artists will participate. Free.
March 3
UNC Jazz Combos, 4 p.m., 107 Hill Hall, off East Franklin Street. The student groups – directed by UNC jazz studies faculty members James Ketch, Stephen Anderson and Ed Paolantonio – will perform with festival artists in residence Don Braden, Sean Jones and Vincent Gardner as soloists. Free.
Concert by Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra with Arturo O’Farrill, 8 p.m. Memorial Hall, Cameron Avenue. Tickets are $10 for UNC students, $28 to $75 for the public, at the Memorial Hall Box Office. Part of the 2005-2006 Carolina Performing Arts Series.
Jazz After Hours, 11 p.m. Top of the Hill Restaurant, 100 E. Franklin St., (919) 929-8676. Jam session open to musicians and listeners who are 21 or older. Some festival artists will participate. Free.
March 4
Workshops and clinics with members of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra with Arturo O’Farrill and UNC students and faculty, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., 107 Hill Hall. Open to the public – musicians and listeners. Free.
UNC Jazz Band and Charanga Carolina concert, 8 p.m. Memorial Hall. Music faculty members James Ketch and David Garcia, respectively, direct the two student groups. Festival artists in residence Don Braden, Sean Jones and Vincent Gardner will perform with the groups. Tickets are $10 for the public at the Memorial Hall Box Office; free for UNC faculty, staff, students.
