Modern dance prodigy Mark Morris
coming to Memorial Hall Feb. 24

CHAPEL HILL – The Mark Morris Dance Group, one of the nation’s most acclaimed modern dance troupes, will perform at 8 p.m. Feb. 24 in Memorial Hall on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus.

The performance is part of the 2005-2006 Carolina Performing Arts Series.

Called "the most prodigiously gifted choreographer of the post-Balanchine era" by Time magazine and "the most exciting modern-dance choreographer in the country" by The New Yorker, Mark Morris is known for his place on the cutting edge of modern dance. Founded by Morris when he was just 24, his is the only modern dance company nationwide to feature live music at every performance.

The Memorial Hall performance will include "Going Away Party," "All Fours," "Three Preludes" and "V." "Going Away Party," choreographed to music by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, takes a look at a crude country bar. "All Fours," set to Béla Bartók’s "String Quartet No. 4," explores the tense relationships of a family of four. "Three Preludes" is a solo work featuring George Gershwin’s "Three Piano Preludes" and a costume designed by Isaac Mizrahi. "V," dedicated to a post-9/11 New York City, has been called "a wake-up call for optimism." It is set to Robert Schumann’s "Quintet in E flat for piano and strings, op. 44."
