UNC school offers seminars to librarians,
others in England, Czech Republic, Slovenia
CHAPEL HILL – The UNC School of Information and Library Science is offering international seminars this summer in Oxford, England; Prague, Czech Republic; and Ljubljana, Republic of Slovenia.
The seminars can be taken for academic credit or on a non-credit basis. Librarianship is the main theme, but the seminars are open to anyone.
Dr. Barbara Moran, a professor and director of international programs in the school, said that participants learn first-hand about libraries in other cultures. “They are able to gain a global perspective on issues facing libraries around the world and come to appreciate that librarians everywhere are linked in a global community of information provision,” she said.
The Oxford seminar will be from May 13-26, offered through a partnership between the UNC school and the University of Oxford. Participants study librarianship in Great Britain at Oxford’s Bodleian Library. Tours of many of the Oxford College libraries, the Oxford University Press and the British Library are included. Registration is due by March 1.
Study in the Czech Republic, from May 27 to June 9 in Prague, will take participants to libraries and facilities at central Europe’s oldest university, Charles University, founded in 1348. Lectures will provide an overview of libraries across the country; participants will tour libraries and other cultural institutions in the Czech Republic.
The Slovenia seminar, from June 3-16, will include tours of libraries and museums, rafting trips and guided tours of the Ljubljana Castle and the Postojna Cave. Optional day trips to Venice and Vienna also will be offered.
The UNC school partners with the University of Ljubljana’s department of library science, information science and book studies to offer the seminar.
Registrations are due by March 15 for the Czech Republic and Slovenia programs. Registration is first-come, first-served. For details, costs and registration forms, visit http://sils.unc.edu/programs/international/.
