Steamboat Foundation selects UNC junior
for summer internship at Bloomberg News
CHAPEL HILL — Rachel Edelsberg, a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has received an internship that will place her at Bloomberg News this summer.
The internship is funded by the Steamboat Foundation of Greenwich, Conn., which seeks to help students build leadership skills based on integrity, work ethic and risk-taking.
From June 13 to Aug. 18, Edelsberg will work in the newsroom of Bloomberg LP, the global, multimedia financial communications firm founded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. She also will participate in events with other Steamboat scholars, including dinners and lectures from business leaders.
"A financial journalism internship is an ideal opportunity to explore my interest in providing business people with the information the need to make the right decisions," she said. "I plan to utilize the innovative technology and influential leaders at Bloomberg to gain a better understanding of the market and become a more effective journalist."
Edelsberg, a business administration major, is the daughter of Drs. Kay and Leo Edelsberg of North Miami Beach, Fla., and graduated from Dr. Michael Krop Senior High School.
The Steamboat Foundation awarded internships to 10 students from 10 U.S. colleges and universities. Carolina is the only public university in the program.
Each school’s internship is with a specific business, health care or other organization. Each intern receives $12,000 for housing, expenses and salary.
"Both UNC, as one of the sponsoring universities, and Rachel, as one of our most distinguished students, are extremely fortunate to enjoy this opportunity," said Dr. George Lensing, director of UNC’s Office of Distinguished Scholarships. "Rachel herself will benefit immensely by participating for 10 weeks in the country’s largest online financial news service in New York. Her career will be significantly shaped and enhanced by the experience."
Edelsberg’s previous honors have included a scholarship for her study abroad this semester at Escola Superior de Comerç Internacional (College of International Business) in Barcelona, Spain.
She also was one of 25 UNC freshmen chosen for the Singapore Summer Immersion Program in 2004, which provides a full scholarship for six weeks at the National University of Singapore and one week of traveling in Southeast Asia.
UNC alumnus Peter Grauer linked Carolina with Bloomberg, where he is president and chair. Grauer also chairs the advisory board for UNC’s honors program and Johnston Center for Undergraduate Excellence, through which the internship is awarded.
Andrew Walter and Peer Pederson Jr., managing partners of investment business Blue Orchid Capital LLC, founded Steamboat in 2003. The foundation is named after Greenwich’s Steamboat Road.
