Mama Dip, Bill Smith
to speak at UNC library
CHAPEL HILL — Local chefs Mildred "Mama Dip" Council and Bill Smith will discuss their new cookbooks Tuesday (Nov. 1) and Nov. 14, respectively, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Council, founder and cook of Mama Dip’s Kitchen on Rosemary Street, will speak about her second book, "Mama Dip’s Family Cookbook," from UNC Press.
Smith, the chef at Crook’s Corner on West Franklin Street for more than a decade, will discuss "Seasoned in the South: Recipes from Crook’s Corner and from Home," published by Algonquin Books.
Both talks will be free to the public at 5:30 p.m. in Wilson Library, with refreshments beforehand at 5 p.m. UNC’s Friends of the Library and Bull’s Head Bookshop will sponsor the events. Each occasion will feature copies of that chef’s book, available for purchase and signing.
Council’s new book offers new recipes and family favorites that weren’t included in her first, "Mama Dip’s Kitchen."
Besides recipes, Smith’s book offers reminiscences about Southern dinners and conveys his appreciation for local produce, seafood and dairy products and the people who sell them.
Fans of the library’s annual "Winter Stories" holiday event, including music, fantasy and storytelling for all ages, should mark their calendars for 5:30 p.m. Dec. 8, with a reception at 5 p.m.
