Contemporary dance-theater works 
coming to Memorial Hall Nov. 11

CHAPEL HILL — Jane Comfort and Company have pioneered the possibilities of multidisciplinary dance since the 1970s, with dance-theater works produced throughout the United States and Europe, and in Latin America.

On Nov. 11, the Carolina alumna and her company will perform in Memorial Hall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The 8 p.m. performance will be part of the 2005-2006 Carolina Performing Arts Series.

Integrating dance, drama, text and song, Comfort explores contemporary social and cultural issues with humor and empathy, crafting magnetic, innovative, deeply thought-out and uncommonly emotional works. Time magazine has called her "the most prodigiously gifted choreographer of the post-Balanchine era."

Comfort choreographed the Broadway musicals "Passion" by Stephen Sondheim and "Amour" by Michel Legrand; the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park production of "Much Ado About Nothing" in New York City; and the Off Broadway musical "Wilder."

A writer and director as well as a choreographer, Comfort has received recent commissions from the Joyce Theater in New York, the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in Massachusetts and the American Dance Festival.

Single tickets – $28 to $50 for the public and $10 for Carolina students – are available by calling (919) 843-3333, or from the Memorial Hall box office on Cameron Avenue, open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Carolina students should call the box office for purchasing information. Series subscriptions also are available.
