Roots musicians Griffith, alumna Tift Merritt,
to play sold-out show at UNC’s Memorial Hall

CHAPEL HILL — Tift Merritt and Nanci Griffith – both Grammy-nominated country music artists – will perform before a sold-out audience on Oct. 7 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Memorial Hall.

The performance will be one of the American Roots concerts in the 2005-2006 Carolina Performing Arts Series.

Griffith grew up in Austin and played her first professional performance at age 14. Her first album, a mix of folk and country music, debuted in 1978 and since then she has released more than a dozen others. She has received five Grammy nominations.

Merritt was born in Houston but raised in North Carolina. She began her music career as a child, singing alongside her father, a folk musician. The singer-songwriter and UNC alumna gained national recognition in 2002 for her alternative country album "Bramble Rose." Her 2004 release, "Tambourine," was nominated for a Grammy award.

Tickets for other Memorial Hall events range in price for the public and are $10 for UNC students. Carolina students should call the box office for purchasing information. To purchase tickets, call (919) 843-3333 or visit the Memorial Hall box office on Cameron Avenue, open Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On performance days, the box office opens from 10 a.m. until intermission. Series subscriptions are also available.
