CHAPEL HILL -- Three outstanding faculty members in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s College of Arts and Sciences will discuss their work in this fall’s College Lights lectures, scheduled on Sept. 12, Oct. 10 and Nov. 7.

The free public lectures will be Tuesdays at 4 p.m. in the George Watts Hill Alumni Center.

Dr. Bart Ehrman, professor of religious studies, will speak on "Lost Christianities: The Battle for Truth in the Early Church" on Sept. 12. He will discuss alternative forms of Christianity that developed in the first three centuries A.D. and were silenced by Christian leaders whose thought prevailed in the fourth century.

On Oct. 10, Dr. Donald Haggis, associate professor of classics, will discuss the enlightened, artistic civilization of Crete in a lecture titled "From Minoan Palace to Greek City-State: The Archaeology of the Cretan Countryside." Haggis, who has conducted archeological research in Crete many times, will describe the Minoan culture of the Bronze Age and the classical city-state that followed. He also will explain how the island's location contributed to its history.

Dr. Andrea Hussong, assistant professor of psychology, will speak on "The Roles of Family and Friends in Adolescent Substance Use" on Nov. 7. Hussong will discuss the ways friends and family

members impact an adolescent’s choice to use or not to use alcohol and drugs. She will explore

adolescent substance abuse from a developmental, psycho-social perspective, highlighting the risks that lead to substance-related problems among teens and how family and friends may prevent such problems.

The College Lights series is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, the General Alumni Association and the Arts and Sciences Foundation. Call 962-6123 for more information.
