Garner foundation establishes
two scholarships at UNC

CHAPEL HILL - The Yeargan Foundation Charitable Trust of Garner, N.C., has endowed two scholarships at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to benefit graduates of Garner High School.

A need-based Yeargan Scholarship will be awarded annually to an incoming freshman with financial need. Preference will be given to Garner High School students, followed by other high school graduates from the Garner area.

A merit-based Yeargan Scholarship will be awarded every four years to an incoming freshman based on academic achievement. The merit-based Yeargan Scholarship will provide financial assistance to the recipient for a four-year period. Preferences will be the same as those for the Yeargan need-based scholarships.

Both scholarships are expected to be awarded for the first time for the 2007-2008 academic year.

The Yeargan Foundation Charitable Trust was created by L.C. Yeargan, Rowann Yeargan, Flora A. Yeargan and Wilma Yeargan Bass. Through their leadership and financial support, the foundation supports various medical and education programs in Wake County and throughout the Triangle area.

Generations of Yeargan family members have attended Carolina. L.C. Yeargan, Sherman A. Yeargan, Sherman A. Yeargan, Jr. and Sherman A. Yeargan III all graduated from Carolina. Rowann Yeargan and Sherman A. Yeargan, Jr. serve as trustees of the Yeargan Foundation Charitable Trust.
