Schwab to chair search committee seeking Moeser’s successor as Carolina’s chancellor

CHAPEL HILL – Nelson Schwab III, the immediate past chair of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Board of Trustees, will chair the search committee to recommend a successor to Chancellor James Moeser.

Roger Perry, who was elected to chair the Board of Trustees in July, today announced details about the 19-member search committee during remarks at a regular board meeting.

Perry and Trustee Karol Mason, the board’s vice chair, will serve as vice chairs of the 19-member committee, which also will represent students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Erskine Bowles, president of the 16-campus University of North Carolina, will give the committee its charge at its first organizational meeting, at 3 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Wilson Library Assembly Room. A second meeting has been scheduled at 1 p.m. Oct. 16 in the Magnolia Room at the Paul J. Rizzo Conference Center at Meadowmont.
           
Perry said the committee would conduct a national search. “We want another great leader who shares the same ideals that James has of making this the leading public university in America and one whose primary mission is to educate and serve the people of North Carolina,” he said.

Moeser, Carolina’s ninth chancellor, Wednesday announced his decision to leave the chancellor’s post on June 30, 2008, the end of the current academic and fiscal year. He will take a research leave and return as a professor. He began the job in August 2000.

Schwab said the search committee would hold two public forums on Oct. 26 and 30 where members of the Carolina community and the public could share the characteristics they hope to see in the next chancellor. Locations and times will be announced later.

In addition, the search committee plans to provide an opportunity for North Carolinians and alumni to share recommendations about people, characteristics or other ideas about the new chancellor, Perry said. A University Web site, currently at www.unc.edu/chan/special, will post updates on the chancellor search process.

The search committee eventually will recommend finalists to the full Board of Trustees, who vote on recommending finalists to Bowles, Perry said. Then Bowles will recommend one candidate to the UNC Board of Governors, which elects the new chancellor.

Schwab of Charlotte is co-founder of the Charlotte-based merchant banking firm Carousel Capital, and completed two terms as trustee chair in June. Also a UNC alumnus, he was first appointed to the board in 2001.

Perry of Chapel Hill is president of East West Partners and was elected trustee chair in July. A Carolina alumnus, he was elected to his first term on the board in 2003.

Mason of Atlanta is a partner at the law firm Alston and Bird LLP. A Carolina alumna, she was appointed as a trustee in 2001.

Other search committee members are:

• Trustee Russell “Rusty” Carter of Wilmington, current secretary of the board, president of the Atlantic Corp. of Wilmington and a UNC alumnus.

• Trustee John Ellison Jr. of Greensboro, president and chief executive officer of the Ellison Company Inc. He holds two Carolina degrees.

• Trustee A. Donald Stallings of Rocky Mount, chief executive officer of Eagle Transport Corp. Inc. and a Carolina alumnus.

• Trustee Eve Carson of Athens, Ga., student body president and a senior political science and biology major who serves ex officio on the Board of Trustees. (Eve Carson served on the search committee until her death March 5, 2008 . She is replaced by J.J. Raynor ).

• Kenneth Broun, Henry Brandis Professor of Law and former dean, School of Law.

• Lisa Carey, associate professor of medicine in the hematology-oncology division, School of Medicine.

• Bruce Carney, Samuel Baron Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy and senior associate dean for the sciences, College of Arts and Sciences.

• James Johnson, director, Urban Investment Strategies Center, Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, and William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship, Kenan-Flagler Business School.

• Joseph Templeton, chair of the faculty and Francis Preston Venable Professor of Chemistry, department of chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences.

• Lauren Anderson, president of the Graduate and Professional Student Federation and a doctoral student in the School of Medicine.

• Ernie Patterson, chair of the Employee Forum and biology network manager, department of biology, College of Arts and Sciences.

• Anna Wu, director of facilities planning, who has played a key role in the successful execution of the University’s current $2.1 capital construction program.

• Julia Sprunt Grumbles of Chapel Hill, a 1975 UNC alumnae and retired vice president of Turner Broadcasting who serves on the Carolina First Steering Committee and co-chairs the Carolina Women’s Leadership Council.

• William B. Harrison Jr., a native of Rocky Mount and currently residing in Greenwich, Conn., a 1966 UNC graduate and retired chairman and director of JPMorgan Chase & Co. He is heading a Global Leadership Circle announced by Moeser on Wednesday.

• Willard J. “Mike” Overlock Jr. of Greenwich, Conn., a 1968 Carolina alumnus, senior director of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and co-chair of the Carolina First Campaign.

• Willis P. Whichard of Chapel Hill, a 1962 UNC graduate who earned a law degree in 1965 and is former associate justice of the N.C. Supreme Court and former dean of the Campbell University law school.

• J.J. Raynor, of Charlotte, student body president-elect and a junior economics and peace, war and defense major who will serve ex officio on the University's Board of Trustees after being sworn in later this spring.
