Carolina faculty to speak to local groups in September

CHAPEL HILL -- The biotechnology revolution, Nazi Germany and pain control are among the topics of the following local lectures this month by faculty members from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. All are free and open to the public except those for Peer Learning members only, although attendees may join at the lectures:
At 1:30 p.m. Sept. 14, Dr. Phil Carl, research professor in the department of pharmacology, will discuss "The Origin of the Biotechnology Revolution" at Binkley Baptist Church at 1712 Willow Drive. Sponsored by Peer Learning, a group of intellectually active retirees that welcomes new members. For more information, call Milton Donin at 929-4946.
At 2 p.m. Sept. 15, Dr. Clark Larsen, who specializes in bioarchaeology -- a field of anthropology that studies human remains from archaeological sites -- will speak at the Carolina House at 100 Lanark Road. In "Bare Bones of Anthropology: What Human Skeletons Tell Us About Our Past," Larsen will discuss his research on the role of bones and teeth in providing a broad perspective on the history of the human condition, including health disease and lifestyle. Dr. Kim Jones, associate professor of surgery, will speak about "Dizziness" at 2 p.m. Sept. 16, at Carolina Meadows, 139 Whippoorwill Lane. For more information, call Martin Green at 968-1654.
Dr. Wayne Christiansen, professor of physics and astronomy, will discuss "Planet Earth from a Cosmic Perspective" at Binkley Baptist Church at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 21. Sponsored by Peer Learning, membership required. For more information, call Milton Donin at 929-4946.
At 2 p.m. Sept. 22, Dr. Dorothy Verkerk, assistant professor of art, will discuss the symbols and meanings of art within the Christian catacombs outside Rome, within the context of Christian beliefs and burial practices. At 11 a.m. Sept. 24, Kenan Professor of History and President of the German Studies Association Dr. Gerhard Weinberg will discuss "Nazi Germany in Peace and War." The lectures are arranged by Carolina Speakers at UNC-CH. The program, which began as a statewide outreach effort in 1993, brings 83 leading faculty members to business, civic and community groups to share their expertise on more than 100 topics, including 44 that focus on North Carolina and the South. The program is one of UNC-CHs efforts to connect with North Carolinians.
