Celebrated voice and speech coach joins PlayMakers, drama faculty
F. Murray Abraham, Annette Bening, Dan Rather and Christopher Walken are among celebrities who have benefited from Dr. Bonnie N. Raphael's speech and vocal coaching.
Now, UNC-CH drama graduate students and actors with PlayMakers Repertory Company, a professional theater company based at UNC-CH, will begin to learn from Raphael. Recently, she accepted an invitation to move here from Harvard, where she had served since 1986 as voice, speech, dialects and text coach for the American Repertory Theatre and voice teacher for its Institute for Advanced Theatre Training. She has been appointed a UNC-CH professor of dramatic art.
In 25 years of coaching actors and other professionals nationwide, Raphael has taught at the National Theatre Conservatory in the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Northwestern University, the University of Missouri/Kansas City and the University of Virginia. She has served as vocal coach on hundreds of productions including many by the Missouri Repertory Theatre, the Virginia Museum Theatre, the Dallas Theater Center and the Denver Shakespeare Festival.
