Three from UNC school plan run
to raise funds for cancer research
Scott Adams of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill plans to run 200 miles in four days to raise awareness about cancer Ė plus donations for research on a cure.
He hasnít chosen the easiest of courses. Adams, director of information technology for the School of Information and Library Science, will run along the Blue Ridge Parkway from Waynesboro, Va., to Fancy Gap, Va., beginning July 27.
Les Chaffin, a school alumnus, will bike alongside Adams and provide support. Kristin Chaffin, an instructor at the school, will contribute logistical support.
Adams and Les Chaffin decided to undertake the trip after Jay Clark, a lifelong friend of Chaffinís, died in May. Diagnosed with stage-four cancer in 2000, Clark left behind his wife, Kristin, and son, Justin, 17.
Adams and Chaffin are asking supporters to donate to the American Cancer Society or the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in memory of Clark.
Adams and Chaffin are available to reporters. Adams can be reached at (919) 962-0235, (919) 929-0612, (919) 260-7749 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
