National Conferences on Languages Across the Curriculum
- Building New Connections - Portland State University, October 11-13, 2006. This 2nd annual conference on Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum builds upon last year's conference at the University of Iowa by focusing on: (1) how to prepare students for CLAC through better K-16 articulation; and (2) how to link foreign language instruction and cultural learning to discipline-specific content. A major goal of the conference is to begin to build alliances among educators to achieve internationalization goals.
- Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum: Responding to a National Need - University of Iowa, November 5-6, 2005. This conference examined opportunities to expand the role of culture in LAC initiatives and considered alternative models that foster the acquisition of cross-cultural competencies. In addition, the conference explored other LAC issues that have not yet been adequately discussed or analyzed, including: 1) How does LAC relate to comparative literature, cultural studies, and area studies? 2) How does LAC fit into the international education missions of U.S. government and industry (the “expert” model vs. the “metropolitan migrant” model)? 3) How does LAC relate to content-based language instruction and the development of new content-based FL textbooks and technology? 4) How can we better link LAC to K-12 foreign language and cross-cultural education as well as to post-secondary international education, including study abroad?
- Languages and Cultures Across the Curriculum: A Post 9/11 Imperative - Binghamton University, October 23, 2004. This conference highlighted innovative efforts to integrate culture and language throughout the university curriculum. Participants considered strategies to make international content and information available to students and teachers in stimulating new ways, and explored fresh approaches to transform teaching structures into more cost-effective and higher-quality learning environments. The conference will provide models for scholarship and action, as well as opportunities for critical discussion about the most effective methods.
