The Organization for African Student's Interests & Solidarity, can trace its roots back to 1981, when it was known as A.F.R.I.C.A. and had about 40 members. Shortly after, the organization became known as the African Student's Association (A.S.A.). In 1996, the organization's leaders changed the name again to reflect their mission of spreading awareness about Africa and its people on UNC-Chapel Hill's campus, or being an Oasis in the Desert of Knowledge.
For the past 20 years O.A.S.I.S. has grown and evolved. The organization's mission no longer just focuses on spreading awareness, but being a resource to it's own members by providing them an environment to embrace African culture and companionship; a resource to the campus, and a resource to other African student organizations in the spirit of unity. Our motto is: Footprints of an OASIS: Lighting the Path towards the "dark continent."
O.A.S.I.S. holds weekly meetings where members come together to discuss current topics and take part in O.A.S.I.S. activities. O.A.S.I.S. hosts a number of speakers throughout the year as well as the Africans Unite! Weekend Retreat with other African student organizations. The biggest event during the year, however, is the annual Africa Night. Africa Night involves a dinner, fashion show, dances, poetry, and plays.
