North Carolina Math Science Education Network - Pre-College Program (Grades 6-12)

The Pre-College Program is designed to prepare students in grades six through 12 to pursue mathematics and science at the university level and beyond. The program implements a variety of activities to stimulate students’ interest in math and science at an early age. In 2004, approximately 97% of Pre-College seniors responding to a senior survey indicated that they would enroll in college after graduation!

Pre-College activities include:

  • Academic Enrichment classes and labs at individual schools
  • MSEN Saturday Academy: classes on a variety of topics on the university campus and field trips to businesses and museums
  • MSEN Summer Scholars Program: five weeks of Science, Math, English and computer curricula in a university setting
  • Academic, college and career advising
  • PSAT/SAT preparation classes
  • MSEN Day, a statewide math/science competition
  • Recognition and scholarship awards
  • PIE (Parents Involved in Excellence) Clubs for parents to support and assist in planning program activities
  • Pre-College ACE (Academic Chapters of Excellence) clubs for high school students interested in achieving high academic performance in science and math
  • Two-day leadership retreats for high school students
