NC Alpha Chapter -- University of North Carolina Chapel Hill
The President of UNC Chapel Hill gave Pi Beta Phi the charter to become the first national sorority on the Carolina campus. The very next day Chi Omega announced that they too were establishing a chapter and they didso before Pi Phi had a chance to install the NC Alpha chapter. Though the debate continues as to who can claim the title of being the first Carolina sorority, Pi Phi and Chi O were the only two sororities at UNC for fifteen years.
In the fall of 1923, Beta Alpha Phi was installed as the first chapter of Pi Phi in North Carolina. The NC Alpha Chapter was
founded in a house where Spencer dorm is now located. At one point, Pi Phi’s even occupied a house where the Chi Omega house is now located. In 1937, Pi Phi moved to its present house on the corner of Hillsborough and Rosemary Street.
The annex, on the corner of Pickard Lane andRosemary was purchased in 1985 to accommodate Pi Phi’s growing numbers.
