Pi Beta Phi Fraternity was founded at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois, on April 28, 1867, as I.C. Sorosis. Pi Beta Phi was the first national secret college society of women to be modeled after the Greek-letter fraternities of men. During a time when few women were admitted to colleges and universities, Pi Beta Phi created a feeling of unity among pioneering women.
The North Carolina Alpha Chapter of Pi Beta Phi began as Beta Alpha Phi on January 15, 1921 and was one of the first sororities to establish itself on the UNC campus. Membership grew over the years, and the goal of obtaining a Pi Beta Phi charter was always in mind. According to the late Mrs. Rose Saunders (whose portrait hangs in the formal room), an authority on our chapter and former House Corporation president, the argument of Chapel Hill in 1923 was whether Pi Phi or Chi Omega was the first sorority on campus.
