Tallgrass prairie, which originally covered nearly 350 million ha in the United States, is today one of the rarest, and least understood, natural biomes in the country. True prairie exists, for the most part, in small isolated locations scattered throughout its original range. This project complements and extends ongoing research and new initiatives to examine the biology of the tallgrass prairie from a variety of perspectives, both basic and applied. Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) participants will be involved in a variety of long-term projects. Participants may choose from a variety of aquatic and bio-diversity studies as well as behavioral, molecular, and physiological investigations. Each participant will present their work in a final symposium.Applicants to the REU program must be United States citizens who have achieved Junior standing at their home institution with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better by the start of the program. Interested students should submit an application form, a cover letter consisting of a short essay describing the applicant's science background and career goals and a statement of why the participant wants to participate in the REU program, a resume, a transcript of all college work, and two letters of recommendation from college instructors, at least one of whom taught a laboratory science class. The statement should also include two possible project mentors.
