Synopsis
The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Undergraduate Research Program provides one of the few places in the world where young people are instructed in the techniques of molecular biology while becoming integrated members of a vibrant scientific community. The fundamental principle of the URP Program is to present students with every opportunity to conduct first-rate research and then rely on self-motivation to achieve a higher level of learning. Specific objectives of the program are to (i) give college undergraduates a taste of original research at the forefront of the biological sciences; (ii) encourage awareness of the physical and intellectual tools necessary for biological research; (iii) foster an awareness of the major problem areas currently under investigation in the biomedical and life sciences; and (iv) become acquainted with research, researchers, and centers for its study.

This past year 20 were selected to work with senior Laboratory staff members on independent research projects in the mentor's field of expertise, specifically in areas of cancer biology, neurobiology, plant biology, cell biology, genetics, molecular and structural biology, or bioinformatics. Each URP student works in a different laboratory directly under the supervision of a senior member of that research group. In addition to research and participation in many social activities, a series of seminars and special events are presented specifically for the URPs by members of the faculty and Dr. James Watson, Nobel Laureate and President of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Also, a large number of eminent scientists come to the Laboratory during the summer to conduct advanced training postdoctoral courses to which attendance at lectures by URPs is permitted, where students have an unparalleled opportunity to learn the latest experimental techniques and to seek advice about their future schooling and research.

URP students are invited to all CSHL social activities, attend a Broadway play or concert in New York City, have pool parties, visit the lovely beaches of Long Island, and generally have a great - and very busy - summer. After 10 weeks of intensive laboratory experience and social interaction, the students are well equipped to know what a career in scientific research might entail.

Guidelines
Approximately twenty-five students can be accepted into the program, which runs for ten weeks. Students will receive a stipend $3000 in addition to free room and board. Women and minority undergraduates are especially encourages to apply. Closing date for applications is February 1, 2004 and the approximate notification date is March 15, 2004. Students may obtain more information and download application forms by consulting the program's web site at http://www.cshl.edu/URP.
