The Summer Scholars Program at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM) has been in existence since 1982. The Summer Scholars program is a premedical program designed to enhance the preparation of students from under-represented minority backgrounds for admission to medical school. This program has enabled the minority students to become more competitive in the application process for medical school and more successful after acceptance to medical school. The program is highly selective; no more than 25 students are chosen to participate each year.Program Objectives include:

- Introduction to osteopathic principles and practices; exposure to basic biomedical sciences taught by medical school faculty
- Introduction to a variety of learning situations used in medical school, including problem-based learning, using case studies, small group discussions, lectures, labs, independent study, use of computers, and pre-clinical observations
- Opportunity to demonstrate readiness to enter medical school, both in terms of academic skills and personal character
- Opportunity for qualified individuals to interview for admission and for all participants to practice good interviewing skills
- Experience of working as a team with other minority premedical students from diverse backgrounds
