Synopsis
The Clinical Health Summer Program (CHSP) is a seven-week experiential learning opportunity held each year from May through July for underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students accepted to or enrolled in a health science or health-related curriculum at Elizabeth State University, North Carolina Central University, or the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.  CHSP consists of both clinical experiences in health care agencies and academic enrichment experiences provided by NC-HCAP Health Careers Centers.

Participants will be placed in a health agency under the supervision of health care professionals in either medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, podiatry, public health, veterinary medicine, nursing, health administration, or allied health.  In addition, students will attend health science seminars, will visit area health care facilities and agencies, and will have the opportunity to interact with many types of health care professionals.

Applicants should be individuals who are underrepresented in the health professions (African Americans, Native Americans, Latino/Hispanics) or who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, who have at least a 2.5 GPA, who are freshmen or sophomores (although some juniors and seniors are accepted), and who are accepted into or enrolled in a health science or health-related curriculum.

To apply, students should submit a photograph, one copy of a college transcript, a one-page autobiographical essay, one letter of recommendation preferably from a science faculty member, two faculty appraisal forms in addition to the recommendation letter, at least one of which should be from a science faculty member, scores on admission tests completed to date, and identification of minority status or evidence of financial eligibility to substantiate economic disadvantage.
