The Science Enrichment Preparation Program (SEP) is an seven-week, honors-level science enrichment program for underrepresented minority and/or disadvantaged college students who want to enter schools of allied health, chiropractic, dentistry, medicine, optometry, osteopathy, pharmacy, podiatry, public health, and veterinary medicine. SEP offers participants more that 150 contact hours in physics, organic chemistry, human physiology, quantitative skills, and biostatistics. In addition, students will be exposed to advanced reading exercises designed to increase reading speed and comprehension, a review of standardized test-taking skills, simulated pre- and post-tests, career planning seminars, courses taught by experienced faculty from UNC-CH and other area institutions, mock interview seminars, site visits to area health care and biomedical research facilities in the area, and a Health Professions Recruitment Seminar.Applicants should be individuals who are underrepresented in the health professions (African Americans, Native Americans, Latino/Hispanics) or who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, who have at least a 2.5 GPA, who are rising sophomores or juniors, have have a minimum of 3 semester hours in math and one course in chemistry and one in biology, and who are permanent U.S. residents or citizens (NC residents receive first priority).
To apply, students should submit a photograph, a one-page autobiographical essay, one letter of recommendation preferably from a science faculty member, two faculty appraisal forms in addition to the recommendation letter, at least one of which should be from a science faculty member, scores on admission tests completed to date, and identification of minority status or evidence of financial eligibility to substantiate economic disadvantage.
