The NIH scientific community is committed to the academic development of students interested in exploring careers in biomedical research. It is in this tradition that we welcome high school, college, and graduate students to join us in the summer months and actively participate in one of the more than 3,000 research projects currently in progress. Successful applicants will join one of our research laboratories for a minimum of 8 weeks between June and September. Some flexibility in scheduling exists to accommodate individual student needs. Start dates are determined by selecting officials and other institute staff.Under the guidance of preceptors, students conduct research in selected areas of laboratory investigation. The goal of the program is to expose students to research procedures in a unique environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research and training. In addition to laboratory experience, two additional components of the program have been designed to enhance the students' NIH experience. The Summer Seminar Series, a series of lectures by leading NIH investigators, introduces students to the latest research discoveries in nearly all of the NIH institutes. At the end of the summer, students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Summer Research Program Poster Day. Poster Day gives students the opportunity to present their work before the NIH scientific community. SEE WEBSITE FOR MORE INFORMATION.
