The University of Georgia Marine Institute Student Intern Program offers the uncommon opportunity for both graduate students and advanced undergraduate students (juniors and seniors) to gain "hands on" experience conducting supervised research in a unique sea-island environment. Interns spend up to three months on Sapelo Island conducting a research project under the direction of an Institute faculty member. Normally, the project is assigned, but student-originated research plans are encouraged. Previous intern projects have covered a wide range of topics including: nutrient cycling in nearshore coastal environments, primary productivity of marshes and beaches, the importance of bacteria and fungi in estuarine food webs, factors that control the distribution and abundance of estuarine plants and animals, and various aspects of estuarine biogeochemistry. Results of outstanding projects have been published as either abstracts or full papers in peer-reviewed journals.Contact Program Specialist for more details.
