Synopsis
The Health Sciences Center, the Combined Graduate Programs in Molecular Biology and Biological Chemistry, and the Bioscience Undergraduate Research Program at the University of Utah are pleased to offer the Summer Research Opportunity Program. This program provides opportunities for qualified minority students to gain research experience in such fields as cell and developmental biology, molecular biology, genetics, neurobiology, biochemistry and immunology. The first three weeks of the program will be spent in an intensive basic techniques laboratory course that has been specifically designed to prepare students to carry out research projects. Students will learn key techniques of modern biology with an emphasis on analytical thinking, and will also become familiar with common laboratory equipment and reagents. Students will then be matched, according to their interests, with faculty sponsors with whom they will spend the following six weeks working on individual research projects. The state-of-the-art research laboratories of these faculty are housed in the School of Medicine and in the Departments of Biology and Chemistry. Students will be expected to work full-time in the research laboratory for the duration of the program.

Guidelines
Applicants must be full-time undergraduates who belong to an ethnic or racial group that is considered by the National Institutes of Health to be underrepresented in the biomedical sciences. Applicants should be of sophomore, junior, or senior standing or recent graduates who will not begin graduate studies in 2003-2004 and have at least a 2.75 GPA.  No previous research experience is required.
