Hooghe, Professor of Political Science , received her Ph.D. from the University of Leuven in Belgium in 1989. Before joining UNC in 2000, she taught at the University of Toronto (1994-2000) and held research fellowships at Cornell University , Oxford University (Nuffield), the European University Institute ( Florence , Italy ), and the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin ( Germany ). Since 2004, she has also been affiliated with the Free University of Amsterdam. Her principal areas of interest are comparative politics ( Europe ), identity, political parties, and political elites. Over the past years she has also researched ethnic conflict, nationalism, and federalism. She is the editor of Cohesion Policy and European Integration: Building Multilevel Governance (OUP, 1996); coauthor with Gary Marks of Multi-Level Governance in the European Union (Rowman & Littlefield, 2001); and author of The European Commission and the Integration of Europe: Images of Governance (Cambridge University Press, 2002). Her research has also appeared in various scholarly journals such as the American Political Science Review, British Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, and International Organization. She is the past Chair of the European Politics and Society Section of APSA (2004-5), and currently vice-chair of the European Studies Association (2005-).
