The Summer Institute in Political Psychology (SIPP)

Dear Colleagues,

We hope you will call your students’ attention to SIPP 2003, which will be held from 11 July to 1 August at the Ohio State University.

What it is--The Summer Institute in Political Psychology (SIPP) provides an opportunity for students of political science and psychology to learn how the two disciplines can inform work in both fields both theoretically and methodologically. This year’s program will be useful for both political psychology novices and those who have already been introduced to the inter-disciplinary field. Important concepts from both disciplines will be introduced to participants through readings to be completed prior to the Institute and lectures given during the first few days of the Institute. Thereafter, the Institute’s focus will be on examples of successful interdisciplinary research presented by prominent scholars, and on the design andexecution of effective interdisciplinary work.

What we’ll be doing--Among this year’s speakers will be John Sullivan, Philip Tetlock, Barry O’Neill, George Marcus, Paul Sniderman, James Sidanius, Faye Crosby, Jon Krosnick, Kathleen McGraw, Don Sylvan, Richard Herrmann, and Marilynn Brewer. Substantive topics will include emotion in political judgment, cognition, social identity, image theory, stereotyping and race, the role of justice in decision-making, problem representation, and the importance of honor and symbolism.
Methodological topics will include the experimental method, content analysis, survey design (including survey experiments), and leadership assessment. Participation in the institute will take the form of readings, attendance at lectures, opportunities for discussion with speakers, and the development and execution of research projects with other students.

When and where--
Sponsored by The International Society for Political Psychology, the Mershon Center, and the Ohio State University’s Departments of Psychology and Political Science, the 2003 Summer Institute will be held on the OSU campus in Columbus, Ohio between 11 July and 1 August.

To find out more--
Further details about the program, as well as information on logistics, fees, and application procedures, are available at http://www.mershon.ohio-state.edu/sipp. Questions may be directed to Thomas Dolan, SIPP assistant director, at sipp@polisci.sbs.ohio-state.edu. The application deadline is April 15, 2003.

We look forward to a highly successful Institute, and encourage all who are interested in exciting interdisciplinary work to join us in Columbus this summer. Please share this invitation with anyone who you think might find SIPP to be an interesting and useful experience.

Marilynn Brewer and Richard K. Herrmann,
Directors
