Projects for the Day For Service

Check out the great and exciting projects that are part of this years program. The service day is scheduled from 8:30am-2:30pm with lunch and transportation provided. Please email Krista Stepney at skrista@email.unc.edu if you have any questions.

  • Alterra Clare Bridge Senior Citizens Project
    • Students will do projects and one - on - one interaction with residents of this assisted living facility. There will also be a MLK tribute program following a one-on-one session with the resident.

  • Britthaven Nursing Home
    • Students will sing and entertain residents

  • Carolina House #1
    • Students will interact with local residents.

  • Carolina House #2
    • Volunteers will prepare and serve ice cream sundaes to residents.
    • Expected Volunteer Capacity: 10
  • Christ United Methodist Church
    • Students will make goody bags for US troops.
    • Expected Volunteer Capacity: 75

  • Department of Environment
    • Students will be involved in clean-up rehabilation.
    • Expected Volunteer Capacity: N/A

  • Downtown Chapel Hill Clean Up
    • Volunteers will work together to help clean up Downtown Chapel Hill. They will assist in removing graffiti, cleaning street benches,removing flyers from kiosks, etc.
    • Some volunteers will also engage in a creative project.

  • Horace Williams Preservation Society
    • Students will have a great experience helping landscape areas that are neeeded by the Preservation Society as well as beautifying surrounding parts of campus..

  • Interfaith Council
    • Students will prepare lunches for residents
    • Expected Volunteer Capacity: N/A

  • NC Botantical Gardens
    • A group of able-bodied, energetic people will help remove invasive exotic plants from the Coker Pinetum (a natural area on campus along Meeting of the Waters Creek). This will involve pulling and cutting vines (such as wisteria, oriental bittersweet, and english ivy), and cutting shrubbery (privet, mimosa, etc.). These exotic plants are out-competing our native plants and destroying habitat for native plants and wildlife. They also make the area less pleasurable for students and staff to visit.

  • Orange County Crisis Rape Center
    • Students will assist with food drive and packaging food.

  • Prediatric Play Room
    • Volunteers will play and interact with children in the play room.
    • Expected Volunteer Capacity: 6

  • The Recyclery
    • Volunteers will participate with bicycle work.
    • Expected Volunteer Capacity: N/A


  • Ronald McDonald House
    • Students will help with cleanup and landscaping for this local nonprofit organization. Weather permitting, this may involve outdoors work.
    • Expected Volunteer Capacity: 15

  • TABLE
    • Volunteers will help the agency move and pack materials.
    • Filling backpacks with food for small children.
    • Expected Volunteer Capacity: 15

  • Triangle United Way
    • Students will participate in landscaping and beautification projects in the community.
    • Expected Volunteer Capacity: 40
