If you would like to assist in the development and sustainment of the Friends of Sailing network, we would love to have your help. Currently, students are the sole organizers of FofS, but any outside assistance with newsletter publication, alumni contact, and network development would be greatly appreciated.
- General purpose:
- Friends of UNC Sailing is made up of club alumni, parents of current members, and others who wish to become involved in supporting the club. The general purpose of the Friends of UNC Sailing network is to provide the UNC Club Sailing Team with the necessary means of maintaining and improving the program. Geared towards both competitive and recreational sailors, long-term support must be present in order to ensure a sustainable level of excellence in UNC Sailing. Though the University of North Carolina budgets a small amount annually towards the club's operating costs, the financial burden of improving both fleet and facilities necessitates outside funding. Also, the inability of students in a student-run club team to surrender all of their time to practice, maintain boats, and coach others places a large value on any time you the Friends of UNC Sailing may give to the club.
- The club's goals:
- We are currently in the process of trying to acquire land on Jordan Lake to make a new home for UNC Sailing. Plans conditional upon being granted access would include building a floating dock for the boats and constructing a storage building. Equally as important is the desire to purchase newer boats. Our fleet of ancient 420's is not enough to develop a strong program, so we also seek newer and better boats. Plans for expansion would undoubtedly facilitate team practice as well as allowing more club members to sail with greater ease.
- How to get involved:
- The UNC Sailing Club is and will always be in need of the following: financial assistance, assistance with coaching and boat maintenance, and material donations. Current wish list items include: a dinghy and outboard that can serve as a coach/chase boat, any sailboats, dock building supplies, and personal gear such as pfd's or dinghy boots. Any financial or material gifts are tax-deductible, and all donations--time, money, goods--are welcomed with great thanks.
