The Gates Cambridge Scholarships
The Gates Cambridge Scholarships were created in October,
2001, by the Bill & Melissa Gates Foundation for scholars
of outstanding academic merit and leadership potential from
every country of the world other than the United Kingdom who
are committed to serving their communities and who gain admission
to the University of Cambridge to pursue a second Bachelor
degree; one year postgraduate courses; or research leading
to the Ph.D. degree. The award includes 7,750 pounds for 12
months, a further discretionary allowance of 1,500 pounds,
and one return economy airfare.

Eligibility
- Outstanding academic transcript with GPA of at least 3.8.
- References: Including a "referee" who can speak
knowledgeably about the student-applicant.
- A statement indicating ambitions for the future and an
indication of how study at Cambridge University will enhance
the attainment of those goals. Leadership potential: using academic skills "to better society".
- Admission to Cambridge University (Please note: Students
applying for Master's or Doctoral study are admitted to
Cambridge through the Board of Graduate Studies. Students
applying for a second Bachelor's degree are admitted by
a College within Cambridge University.)
Application Procedure
The Office of Distinguished Scholarships suggests applicants provide this letter, or a version of it, to all those whom you ask to write recommendations
Application for admission to Cambridge University must be
submitted by the beginning of October, 2008 (please see Gates Cambridge website.). Students must send completed
Cambridge Application Forms and Gates Supplementary Information
Forms to the Secretary of the Board of Graduate Studies by
that date. Those invited for an interview will be informed
around the end of December and interviews will be conducted
in February in Annapolis, MD. Interviews will be conducted
by panels of senior academics and other distinguished graduates
from the University of Cambridge and from the U.S. Interviews
will last for twenty-five minutes.
