National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships

NSF Graduate Fellowships offer recognition and three years of support for advanced study to approximately 900 outstanding graduate students in mathematics, engineering, and the physical, biological, behavioral and certain social sciences, including the history of science and the philosophy of science, and to research-based PhD degrees in science education. Approximately 90 awards will be in the Women in Engineering (WENG) and Women in Computer and Information Science (WICS) components.

Eligibility

  1. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States.
  2. Fellowships are intended for individuals in the early stages of their graduate study.
  3. There are three opportunities to apply: prior to or during the senior year of college, the first year of graduate school, and the beginning of the second year of graduate school.

Selection process

The application cycle begins in the fall. Deadlines for entering the competition are dependent on the proposed field of study; each deadline closes at 5 p.m.

  1. FastLane: An applicant can submit an application electronically. The Graduate Research Fellowship application forms page contains a complete kit of fellowship application forms.
  2. Faculty submitting reference reports for fellowship applicants can process through the FastLane web site (see above).
  3. Awards are announced in the Spring by NSF.
