Our History

Founded on April 20, 1898 at Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia, Tri Sigma has grown to encompass shared experiences among more than 80,000 women in the United States and abroad. The Delta Delta chapter of Tri Sigma holds true to the founding principles over a century later. Like our founders, we cherish and maintain the traditions of strong character, academic excellence, community service, and lifelong friendships.

Our sisterhood is unique because of the everlasting bonds of friendship we share. Our friendships are strengthened by the time we spend together during extracurricular activities, service projects, and social events. Together, we learn that our greatest rewards come when we give of ourselves.

Sigma symbols

* The purple violet is our official flower. A Golden Violet is a violet-shaped insignia given to women who have reached their 50th year of active sisterhood.

* Our open motto is "Faithful Unto Death." The skull and crossbones represent this motto and appear on our badge.

* The Crest, or Coat of Arms, is a symbol whose meaning is revealed to each sister during initiation.

* To the sisters of Tri Sigma, the sailboat represents continual forward motion, never moving backward, but progressing forward towards its destination.

* Our jewel is the pearl. Pearls are inset on the badge worn by initiated members.

* Our colors are royal purple and white.
