A graduation celebration for SLI seniors was held in the Global Education Center on Sunday, April 19th. In attendance were mentors, families, rising classes of sophomore and junior mentor/mentees, and others involved with the program.
Speakers included mentor Pablo Friedmann and student Sheila Mondragón, with closing remarks given by Paul Cuadros, author of UNC's 2009 summer reading book.
The graduation ceremony for the 10 students was all the better due to the tremendous success of the class of 2009. Three students will attend UNC Chapel Hill, one with the prestigious Morehead scholarship. Two of the class will attend the University of Richmond on full scholarships.
The success of these students is an indicator of the SLI's powerful role in shaping lives. Paul Cuadros cautioned the graduates to never forget what they had learned in the program and to apply their success to speaking for those less fortunate.
